Order and Chaos

Maybe martial arts training is a balance of order and chaos?

You need order – discipline, respect, and intelligently paced learning.

You also need chaos – free testing, “try it outs”, and “yeah, but what ifs”.

In a traditional martial arts dojo, there could be too much order, and not enough chaos.
Too many static moves and poses.
Old-time training with no acknowledgement for what people are doing on the streets now.
No practice at varying speed with broken timing and open-ended attacks to see what really works.

In a MMA gym, there could be too much chaos, and not enough order.
Too many raging-ego tough guys doing it “their way”.
No consistent drill of foundations as to what allows a martial art to become increasingly subtle and efficient.
No real respect for traditional warrior protector dignity and ethos.

The best way to approach the martial arts? Maybe have a careful balance
of the two – order and chaos.

Our To-Shin Do looks for a perfect blending – the reassurance of order and the excitement of chaos.
